What is Gestational Surrogacy?
A: A surrogate is a woman who carries and delivers a baby for someone else. The surrogate is known as a “gestational surrogate” or “gestational carrier,” while the parents-to-be are the “intended parents.” The intended parents are involved from start to finish. They are present at the birth, and will legally become the baby’s parents after delivery.
In gestational surrogacy, the baby is not biologically linked to the surrogate. An embryo is created using an egg of either the intended mother or egg donor, while the sperm is taken from the intended father or sperm donor. That embryo is then implanted in the surrogate’s uterus during an embryo transfer.
