Becoming an egg donor can help individuals and couples struggling with infertility. By donating your eggs, you contribute to making the baby dreams of hopeful parents come true. Yet, there are certain requirements that need to be met. So, let’s examine these further and determine if egg donation is right for you.

Egg Donor Health Requirements

Egg donors require various screening processes before undergoing any procedures for egg retrieval, including meeting specific health requirements. These include being in good physical and mental health, having a healthy BMI, having regular menstrual cycles, being free from STIs, being a non-smoker, having good vision, and having a normal karyotype (chromosome study).

With ELITE IVF, our screening process includes testing and confirmed negative results for various diseases, including HIV, cytomegalovirus, toxoplasma, rubella, syphilis, cystic fibrosis, herpes, chlamydia, hepatitis B and C, and HTLV 1/2. All this valuable health insight is passed on to the egg donor for free and is a real benefit to her.

Egg Donor Age Requirements

Since fertility declines with age, an egg donor must be between ages 18-34. This often ensures quality eggs, which may significantly decline after the age of 35.

Egg Donation Genetics

On top of the above health requirements, egg donation also involves genetic testing to rule out any serious genetic diseases. As mentioned above, the egg donor must have a normal karyotype which includes all 46 chromosomes and this will be revealed through testing.

Commitment To Being An Egg Donor

Being an egg donor requires a moderate time commitment. In most cases, the egg donor undergoes two initial screening sessions to determine if the person meets the prerequisites above. Once the egg donor is matched with the intended parent(s), the egg donor is required to attend about six visits within two weeks to undergo the egg retrieval process. During this time, it’s recommended to take time off of work or school, particularly on the day of egg retrieval due to light sedation and other medications.
